hi jeff,
ReplyDeleteMarc here. I have to admit there were a few tracks that I knew all too well or didn't love the artist (sting), but once i hit play, didn't skip a one. Really liked the Sting track actually. Standouts: Surround Me With Your Love made me want weak, Big Log, The Wings (excellent choice), the Aida track, and as always How Soon is Now. Some caught me off guard like Rough Boy (had that cassette!)and a few like At Last and Come What May that evoked a joyous tear, not sorrow for me. So good call on playing with my emotions.
Thanks!!
Hey Marc -- I didn't start listening to cool and obscure music until I was in my 40's, hence many of my emotional tags are tied to songs everyone knows too well. That was part of why I felt overexposed, and unhip. Thanx for being kind in your comments. I need to get to work on listenign to everone's submissions. JAK
ReplyDeleteI think your submission was a much more personal album than mine was - I tried to pick songs that were more "generic" in their heartache-ry, and I do get the feeling that your selections are totally, 100% personal. This is the soundtrack to breakups, betrayals, or other lost longings.
ReplyDeleteThe songs that really resonated for me are:
Julia - has a very subdued melancholic nature... In a good way, I see a high school boy writing this for the girl he loves.
Human - I haven't associated this with ache until, since it has an uptempo beat. As I mentioned, I like that duality - things that appear one way on the surface but have something underneath
At Last - Oh god, they just don't make voices like that any more (despite what they say about Amy Winehouse)
The Wings - talk about movie scores... Very nice selection. The music does a good job of capturing the essence of that movie
Streets of Philadelphia - we clearly tapped into the same moment in time. I picked mine because I can very clearly remember that home movie footage. While I think this is a better song, I am a sucker for the plaintive voice.
How Soon is Now - love love love the song. Don't really think of it as achy though.
Come What May - another good selection. A good, star-crossed lover song.
Witness - Love her voice. Very emotional and moving.
Thanx, Colin. You got it - head on.
